A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Mary Ann Rigby married Charles Clark in 1880 at Wandsworth, Surrey, when her age was about 16 years. Yet she appears in the 1881 census at her parents' home in Wandsworth as a 17-year-old daughter; in the same year her husband was a private in the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards and was listed at his mother's house in Wimbledon. He was probably normally in barracks, which might explain why his new wife was living with her parents. By 1891 Charles and Mary Clark were living together in three rooms in Wandsworth and had five children, born between 1883 and 1888. Another 4 children were born to them in the next decade, up to the 1901 census when there were 11 living in the same three rooms in Wandsworth.
[Note: The Royal Dragoon Guards formed on 1 August 1992 as a result of the amalgamation of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. As both were in their turn the result of the amalgamations in the 1920s, the Royal Dragoon Guards now integrates the traditions and history of four of the finest Regiments of the Cavalry — the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, the 5th Dragoon Guards, the 7th Dragoon Guards and the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. All four were raised between 1685 and 1689, during the protracted contest between James II and William of Orange for the English throne. The Royal Dragoon Guards, now equipped with Challenger II Main Battle Tank, are presently (2007) stationed in Münster, Germany, continuing a tradition of service that now runs to over three hundred years].
