Note: At the time of this marriage Charles was actually 26 years old; born in 1869. The reason for the discrepancy is not known. Emma was born Emma Smith, daughter of Joseph W. Smith and Alice Underdown. Her mother later remarried, to James Malyea, and Emma gave her surname as Malyea on the marriage license when she married Charles H. Barnum.
