Joseph Barnum enlisted in Danbury, Connecticut, and served with the 4th Brigade, 16th Regiment of Connecticut Militia (Colonel Nehemiah Beardsley), Captain Daniel Hickok's Company [1776-1779]. Note: The Sixteenth Regiment Connecticut Militia, raised in 1771, was formed of companies from Danbury (formerly of the 4th Connecticut Regiment), Ridgefield (formerly of the 9th Connecticut Regiment), Newtown (formerly of the 4th Connecticut Regiment) and New Fairfield (formerly of the 13th Connecticut Regiment). The Fourth Brigade of Connecticut Militia, in turn, was formed of the Fourth, Ninth, Thirteenth and Sixteenth Regiments.
