Information found on the death certificate of Ira Allen Barnum, son of Sylvia and Burgess Barnum, shows her name as Sylvia Quale. The same record shows her birthplace as Connecticut.
In the US Census of 1880 for Litchfield, Bradford County, Pennsylvania Sylvia Barnum was enumerated as follows:
Dwelling #23, Family #23
Sylvia Barnum, W, F, 65, Widow, Keeping house, b. New York, Father b. Ireland, Mother b. Connecticut
The family of her son Smith D. Barnum was living nearby, in Dwelling #226; Family #236.
From the Bradford Star, Towanda, Pennsylvania, Thurs., Jan 10, 1901: Mrs. Sylvia Barnum, relict of Burgess Barnum, died at the home of her son, S. D. Barnum, in South Waverly, Jan 6, of paralyis, aged 86 years. Deceased was a native of Schoharie county, N.Y. She moved with her husband to Sheshequin in 1843, but had been a resident of South Waverly for the past 28 years. Two sons and one daughter survive.
Suzan Verry Walter has a copy of a letter written in 1938, when a family reunion was being planned, which states in part that "Phebe Queal had one brother, George S. Queal, and a half sister Silva, who married Barnabus [sic] Barnum." In the 1880 census Sylvia stated that her mother was born in Connecticut, and Phebe stated that hers was born in New York. This seems to support the statement that the girls were half-sisters. However, in the 1900 census Sylvia also stated that her mother was born in New York. Additionally, the only children of George S. Queal for whom documentation has been found are John Queal (b. 1801), William B. Queal (b. 1803), Phebe Queal (b. abt. 1813), Sylvia Queal (b. 1815) and Clarinda Queal (b. abt. 1831).
