Notes for Warren Addison BARNUM


Warren Barnum was educated in the public schools of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and at Michigan Central College. He left home at 18, and worked at several odd jobs while attending college part time. He began as a clerk in a Marshall-Wells Hardware store in Duluth, Minnesota, at the age of 20, working there from 1895 to 1900, when he moved to Idaho. In 1903, he used his savings to found the W. A. Barnum Lumber Company. His company merged with another the following year, to become Barnum, Starbird and Hill. In 1905, he sold his interest in that company and accepted a position as Superintendent, Gerhart Bradrick Lumber Company. In 1914, he moved to Crossett Western Lumber Company, also as Superintendent.

He moved his family to Vancouver, Washington, in 1923, where he assumed the position of Dock Superintendent for the Columbia River Paper Mills. From 1937 until his retirement in 1948, he was superintendent of the Independence Sand and Gravel Company. He also served on the Independence City Council, 1936-1948, and was chairman of the Polk County Red Cross, 1928-1948. He was an Odd Fellow, a Mason and a Democrat.

Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to El Cerrito, California. Shortly after the death of his wife, which occurred in 1955, he moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where he lived with the family of his youngest son, Donald, until his own death in 1964. He died at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 16 days. SS# 542-10-3156 Oregon.

Warren A. Barnum died at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 16 days.

From the Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) · 3 May 1964, Sun · Page 8: Corvallis -- Warren A. Barnum, 89, former resident of Independence, died at a Corvallis hospital Friday.
He was a retired lumberman and sawmill operator and had lived in Oregon since 1912. He lived at Independence from 1923 to 1946 when he moved to California. About two years ago, he came to Corvallis to live with his son, Donald. He was a member of the Congregational Church, and the Independence Masonic Lodge and IOOF Lodge and a charter member of the Independence Lions Club.
Surviving are sons, Donald, Corvallis, and Gordon, Sandy; daughter Mrs. Marion Patterson, El Cerrito, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at McHenry Funeral Home, Rev. Millard Scherich officiating. Burial will be at Rose City Cemetery, Portland.
