A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family refers to Joshua as a captain, and states that he enlisted 5 Apr 1758, 20 years old. The unit of his enlistment was the Dutchess County Militia, 3rd NY Regiment. From the Muster Roll of New York Provincial Troops, 1755-1765, p. 110: Joshua Barnum, Jr., age 21, of Connecticut, farmer, enlisted Apr 5, 1758.
He was later made captain of his own company, in Major Brinton Painor's Dutchess County 6th regiment of militia.
From the Alphabetical List of Officers of the Continental Army, page 88: Barnum, Joshua, Jr. (N. Y.). Captain New York Militia, 1775; wounded and taken prisoner, when and where not stated.
The Sears Burying Ground, also called the Old Southeast Burying Ground, belonged to the Church of East Philippi. It is located on the west side of Route 22, just south of the Dykeman Road.
