Azor Barnum served during the Revolutionary War as a captain in the Dutchess County Militia. The company commanded by Captain Barnum formed part of Colonel John Field's 3rd New York Regiment. The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family and The Barnum Family, 1517-1904 agree that he had three sons and four daughters. The US Census of 1790 shows Azor Barnum, with two other free white males of 16 years and upwards, two free white males under 16 and 6 free white females, living in Southeast, Dutchess County, New York.
From A Genealogy of Benjamin Cleveland (pub. 1879 by Horace Cleveland) Appendix: The ancestry of Capt. Azor Barnum, the maternal grandfather of Anna M. The descendants of the senior Thomas Barnum are scattered in all directions over the New England and other States, though the orthography of the name is sometimes changed to Barnham. The distinguished iron master, Hon. William H. Barnum, late United States Senator from Connecticut, as well as the "great American showman," Phineas Taylor Barnum, of Bridgeport, Conn., are both descendants of the aforesaid common ancestor, Thomas Barnum, of Fairfield, Conn.
