A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Dorset Land Records (Vol. 4) claim a relationship to the 2 daughters and son Ashbel, entered 1802. In the distribution of the estate of Anne Dunning's father, Francis Barnum signed for his children's share, and the witness to his signature was a Dorset, VT town official at the time of the distribution. Francis married 2nd, Sarah Gray, widowed mother of Isaac Gray. (Not of the John and Edward Gray clan). Francis' daughter, Lusine, later married this same Isaac Gray.

page 281: Isaac Hitchcock of New Milford, CT to Francis Barnum of Dorset, VT for £18, for 100 acres in Feb. 1784.
In Feb. 1790 Francis sold property to Daniel Barnum and Heman Barnum for £4. They were of Dorset, also. Witnessed by Ashbel D. Barnum and Richard Dunning.

Jerad Duning (or Deming) of Newtowne, Fairfield County, Colony of Connecticut, in New England for £40 from Francis Barnham of Dorset in the County of Charlotte, Province of New York for one-half of 250 acres in Dorset, originally belonging to Gideon Lyman, Esq.

Francis Barnum to son Ashbel D. Barnum 50 acres for love and good will in Jan. 1801
Jan 14 of the same year, for $500 of my son Ashbel for another 50 acres. Sarah Barnum, widow of Francis Barnum late of Dorset for $5.00 from Ashbel D. Barnum.
9 April 1803: Sarah Barnum to Daniel Gray for $1.00 for 1+ acre. Isaac Gray quit claim deed to Sarah Barnum, widow of Francis for 11 acres.
21 July 1803. Ashbel quit claims to Sarah 75 1/3 rods from the first division.
A Francis Barnum of Newtowne paid £8 for 4 acres near his house, from his brother William in 1767. He sold both pieces of land for £50 in 1773 to Joshua Northrup only now the town is called Newbury. If this is the right Francis, this would be about the time he moved to Vermont. It would also explain the connections in later years for buying and selling land between persons in Newtown and Francis in Vermont.
Dorset Land Records, Volume 4, dated 1801, contains the statement: "I, Francis Barnum, for love. . . to my two daughters. . . Caty, wife of Amos Thompson and Lusina, wife of Isaac Gray. . ." Another entry says: ". . . to my son Ashbel for love. . ."
Daniel was in Hinesburg and Dorset, VT. There are land transactions of Daniel and his father Francis in Hinesburg records. Daniel's probable first wife died at Hinesburg before 25 March 1813 and he possibly remarried shortly after, (because there are eight persons in the household in 1820, one male and one female over the age of 45 at Hinesburg, VT.) to Hannah. She was still alive when the estate of Daniel was probated, with his only property being in Hinesburg and his only heir being his former wife Hannah of Ohio City, Ohio. At some point, this Daniel moved to Chautauqua, NY, where a Daniel Barnum, formerly of Dorset, VT, died in 1840 at age 78. An affidavit included in his probate packet says that a friend from Hinesburg had never heard Daniel mention any parents or siblings. By the time he died all but Lucina would have been deceased.
