Notes for Samuel BARNUM

Captain Samuel Barnum was with General James Wolfe (1727-1759) in Canada, and was present at the battle of the Plains of Abraham (Plaines d'Abraham). Wolfe came to America in 1759 as the choice of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1708-1778) to command the expedition to capture Québec from the French, under Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Grozon, Marquis de Montcalm de Saint-Veran (1712-1759). On 13 Sep 1759 on the Plains of Abraham, at the western edge of the city of Québec, the French and British met in a battle in which both commanders were killed. The outcome of that battle secured Québec for the British. Interestingly enough another relative of the author, Pierre-François Macchabé dit Lajeunesse Marin (1732-1794), also fought in that battle -- on the French side. He settled in Québec following the French defeat and fathered 26 children by three wives.
