A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
The Washington, D.C. City Directory, 1890 shows an entry for, Name:
Lulu L Barnum Location 1: 1105 13th Northwest, City: District of
Columbia, State: DC, Year: 1890
The 'Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family' gives her name as Lola.
She is said to have been a Concert pianist. In the Library of Congress
Collection of American 19th-Century Sheet Music, Copyright Deposits,
1870-1885, are included several pieces of sheet music created and
published by Lula Lloyd Barnum around 1885. Titles include Friendship
March, Winfield Waltz, My Thoughts are Wandering and Cleveland is His
Name.
The following affidavit was found in the National Archives. It was
written in support of an application for a government pension filed by
a sister of Lula Lloyd Barnum.
AFFIDAVIT - The affiant Robert W. Herr, states that he was one of the
witnesses and attendents at the marriage of Fannie Lloyd and Captain
Albert H. Smith on the 8th of July, 1866, in the City of Cincinnati,
State of Ohio. Affiant states that the other attendants where Miss
Lula Lloyd, a sister of Miss Fannie Lloyd; that Miss Lula Lloyd
afterward married Mr. Benjamin B. Barnum. Also Miss Alice Smith, a
sister of Captain Albert H. Smith, afterwards married to a Mr. William
Cox. Captain Sam Taylor was also an attendant. Affiant further states
that Miss Lula Lloyd, Afterwards Mrs. Benj. B. Barnum and Miss Alice
Smith, afterwards Mrs. William Cox. and Captain Sam Taylor, are now
all dead and that this affiant is the only living witness of said
marriage ceremony. Affiant states that the ceremony was performed by
the Rev. W.T. Moore, at the Christian Church on the corner of Eighth
and Mound Streets in the City of Cincinnati that his information is
that Rev. W.T. Moore is still living in England, a minister of the
Christian Church. Affiant says that this affidavit is given at the
request of Mrs. Fannie Lloyd Smith, widow of Captain Albert H. Smith,
in support of her statement made in her application for a pension from
the State of Kentucky as a widow of a Confederate soldier, that she is
the widow of said Captain Albert H. Smith continuously as residents of
the city of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, from the date of
their marrage on July 8th 1866, to the death up Captain Albert H.
Smith on September 1st, 1898, he himself being a resident of said
County and State during said period, and that he knows that the
petitioner herein is the widow of Captain Albert H. Smith. Affiant
states that he is willing to make any further affidavit or give any
proof he may be able to produce in proof of his assertion as to the
identity of Mrs. Fanny Lloyd Smith as the widow of Captain Albert H.
Smith C.S.A.
