A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Amos inherited, at the time of his father Caleb's death, Lot 26, Concession 9. Rylestone is now located on Lot 26, Concession 9, Seymour Township. This was predominately a farming area, where maple sugaring, logging bees, and barn raisings formed an important part of the social life. In 1913, the cheesemaker W.H. Gibson opened a small general store in the curing room of the cheese factory and expanded it to include Amos Barnum's coal-oil business. The Bible Christians worshipped in a small frame church, sometimes called the White Church, located near the cemetery on land donated by James Jacobs at Concession 13, Lot 20, west half. Until Zion Church was built at Petherick's Corners in 1878, many people from the Petherick's area walked to the White Church. When a minister was not available, Amos Barnum and other laymen conducted the service. In 1884, after a prolonged debate, the Bible Christians, the Episcopal Methodists and the Wesleyan Methodists united. Henceforth, they were known simply as the Methodist Church. The union occurred during the pastorate of Reverend Dingman. The Zion Church was one of four churches on the Seymour Circuit. The minister was responsible for three services each Sunday and one congregation would have a local preacher, such as Mr. Winters or Amos Barnum. Prayer meetings were held every Wednesday night. Amos Barnum usually led the prayer meetings, as well as requesting testimonies before the Sunday service. Amos was also a Superintendent of the Sunday School.
His name also appears (mistakenly) as Amos Alfred Barnum.

Note: The Women's Institute established the Barnum Centennial Community Park, at the junction of the ninth line of Seymour and the Seymour-Rawdon boundary road, in memory of the Barnum family who lived in the area. The dedication ceremony was held June 10, 1967. The park has since been closed.
Amos Alfred/Aden Barnum was buried in Zion United Cemetery, Petherick's Corners, Seymour Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada.
His death date also appears as April 7.
He was buried in Zion Cemetery.
