He enlisted April 22, 1775 for service in the Revolutionary War. He served as a sergeant in Captain Whittlesey's company, Colonel Paterson's Regiment.

In the US Census of 1790 for Stockbridge, Berkshire, Massachusetts there is enumerated the family of a Moses BARNUM as follows:
