From the New York Daily Tribune, July 17, 1857: Another sudden death at Ballston Spa–Mr. Eli Barnum, a well-known and highly respectable citizen of Ballston Spa, arose in his usual health on Monday morning last. After breakfast he called, as was his custom, upon a relative to read the morning paper. He had scarcely taken his seat, and before opening the paper, he quietly and calmly yielded himself to the King of terrors. He leaves a large circle of family and friends to mourn his loss.
