Notes for Mary BARNUM

From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, November 23, 1899: Obituary. Mrs. Mary Amerman. Mary Amerman, widow of John W. Amerman, formerly a leading citizen of Brooklyn, died at her home, Monday, in the 85th year of her age. Mrs. Amerman was born in Bethel, Conn., August 22, 1815. Her parents were Philo Barnum and Irena Taylor, who were married in 1808. She was the youngest of five children, all of whom are dead, and of whom Phineas Taylor Barnum, the great showman, was possibly the best known. Early in life Mrs. Amerman moved to Brooklyn, where her husband had been born. They lived for a long time in the lower part of Brooklyn and her husband was one of the best known printers in New York City for many years. He afterward moved to Washington avenue, about forty years ago, when the neighborhood was little more than fields. Mrs. Amerman was one of the earliest members of Washington Avenue Baptist Church, with which she held her membership to the last, and of which her relatives are all leading members. Mr. Amerman died twenty-four years ago, after forty years of married life.

Mrs. Amerman was an interesting and remarkable woman. Her opinion in many matters was sought and followed to the end. Her illness was of short duration and was the result of heart failure. The funeral was held yesterday from her late home and her pastor, the Rev. Robert MacDonald, officiated. She is survived by three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her daughters are the wives of well known Brooklynites. Mrs. George Wilson is the wife of the secretary of the New York Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Edgar B. Mangam is the wife of a well known merchant of Manhattan, who is also a deacon in Washington Avenue Baptist Church, and the third is the wife of Charles S. Dingee, also a well known merchant of Manhattan and chairman of the board of trustees of Washington Avenue Baptist Church Society.
