In 1897 he was employed by the Wagner Palace Car Co., in New York
City.
From the Harlem Valley Times, Thursday, October 1, 1931: J. Edward [sic] Barnum of Amenia Union died suddenly at his home early Saturday morning following an attack of heart disease. Returning Friday evening from New York where he made his business headquarters, he was seized with a violent illness, thought to be indigestion. He retired but became worse and died before a physician could reach the house. Born in Amenia Union, November 20, 1869, son of the late John D. Barnum and Harriett Potts Barnum, he has been active in the life of the community despite the fact that his work in late years took him to New York and other places. He was a representative for a time clock and recording firm, and was considered an authority on factory payroll costs and expenses. He also represented the Vapre Gas Corporation in the district. He is survived by his widow and a brother John D. Barnum who also lives in Amenia Union...Burial was in the family plot at Amenia Union Cemetery.
