Frederick was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was graduated from Wesleyan University in 185-; admitted to the New York Conference, on trial, in May 1859; in full connection May 1861; ordained deacon in May 1861; elder in May 1863; assigned to Peekskill, New York, 1859; Carmel, New York, 1860; Lake Mahopac, New York, 1861; Great Barrington, Massachusetts, 1862-3; Pine Plains, New York, 1864-6; Saugerties, New York, 1867-9; Shrub Oak, New York, 1870-1; and Central Church, Yonkers, New York, 1872-3. He was preaching for the Presbyterian Church at Thompsonville, Connecticut in October 1875.

From the Middletown (NY) Daily Herald, Wednesday, March 29, 1911: Obituary Notes. The Rev. Frederick Shepard Barnum died Tuesday in Kingston, N. Y. at the age of seventy-four. He was born in Bethel, Conn. In 1859 he was graduated fro Wesleyan University and was licensed to preach in the New York Conference. In 1899 he retired and moved to Kingston. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Dr. Fred Barnum, of Brooklyn, Lawrence Barnum, a banker of New York, and Dr. Oliver S. Barnum of California.

From the New York Times, 30 March 1911: The Rev. Frederck Shepard Barnum died Tuesday in Kingston, N.Y. He was born 74 years ago in Bethel, Conn. Mr. Barnum was graduated from Wesleyan University in 1859 and was licensed to preach in the New York Conference. He retired in 1899 and moved to Kingston, N.Y. He leaves a widow and three sons, Dr. Frederick Barnum of Brooklyn, Lawrence Barnum, a banker of New York, and Dr. Oliver S. Barnum, of California.
