A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family gives Catherine Hopkins as the name of Albert Barnum's wife but no documentary evidence has been found to support that statement. Several different sources give his wife's name as Maryetta, Mary Etta, Mariette and Maryette.
Mary Etta was the fifth of nine children. Source: Affidavits in application of Olive Day for a pension following the death of her son Edwin Day.
Mary Etta (Day) Barnum and her husband Albert wrote an affidavit from Noble County, Indiana for her mother Olive Day in 1864, testifying that they had known Olive’s husband Harvey, who had died in 1843 in Sullivan County, and that they had also known her son Edwin, who died during the Civil War. Olive was applying for a pension as the mother of Edwin, who died on 27 January 1862 of measles and pneumonia at the Camp of Instruction in Washington, DC while a member of Company "G" of Berdan's Sharpshooters (1st US Sharpshooters).

Kingsley April 24, Mrs. Mary Etta Barnum died at Mayfield this morning at the age of 83. She leaves one son and three daughters and one brother in Wisconsin. The funeral arrangements will not be made until the arrival of her relatives and will be announced later.
