Ancestor Gloria Bello has shared her story of "How I found my George Williams Barnum, or at least was able to identify him from the several that are here on your web site" [www.barnum.org]. She says, "I did not even know that his middle name was Williams, I just had the initial W. For years I could not find anything about him. He is my great grandfather, May L. Barnum's father. One day, I received a large package in the mail. It was unexpected and was from a first cousin in Connecticut. In it were many very old photos and some things that he had just kept and had tossed into this box. It took a while to go through each item, looking at things that brought back some memories. Well, I got to a picture of a fine looking gentleman and on the back, someone had written 'Starr Hickok Barnum, brother of May's father'. I was in shock! It was this that enabled me to return to your website and find Starr Hickok Barnum and my great grandfather's family, and thus my ancestors. Also in that box was a picture of George's wife, Harriet Seymour Barnum. I shall be eternally grateful to the person who took the time to identify that fine looking gentleman in the photo. As you see, I included Starr's and Harriet's photos in your Photo Archives. I just thought you might enjoy this story. Thank you for your web site that has enabled me to complete my family search."
George Barnum married Harriet Elvira Seymour. Their only child was May Louise Barnum born 1870. Harriet died in 1871 and May was raised by her mother's sisters. George died of Tuberculosis New York and was buried within 24 hours, as required by law.
