Notes for Amos Woodruff BARNUM


In the "United States Index to Service Records, War with Spain, 1898", Amos is listed as a sergeant with Company "L", Third Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. On 3 January 1899 he filed for an Invalid pension as a result of his service during the Spanish-American War. His application number was 1217.945. Since the record of his application includes the certificate number 1293082, it is assumed that he did receive a pension.

In the 1880 US Census for Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, Amos, age 9 years, was enumerated with his parents and siblings.

In the 1916 Canadian Census for Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (District 15, Sub-District 04) the family of Amos Barnum was enumerated as follows:

[Note: Phoebe and Mary were daughters of Mabel Barnum and Jack P. Bowling. Mabel was the younger sister of Amos, born in 1874].

In a passport application dated 11 September 1919 Amos stated that his legal domicile was in Chicago, Illinois and his permanent residence at Vancouver, BC, Canada, where he had lived for the past ten years. He stated that he was a commercial traveler for Vallens & Company, Ltd. of London, Ontario, Canada and would be traveling through England and France to Belgium, where he would be assisting his wife's relatives to reestablish their business as lace manufacturers. It was his intent to return to the United States within two years.

In a passport application dated 17 April 1922 Amos stated that his previous passport had not been used. He gave his permanent residence as San Francisco, California. He stated that he was an importer and would be leaving the United States for "travel and recreation" through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. It was his intent to return to the United States within one year.

Amos arrived at the port of New York on July 12, 1922 aboard S. S. Olympic from Cherbourg, France.

Amos arrived at the Port of New York on November 26, 1923 aboard S.S. Leviathan also from Cherbourg.

In a passport application dated 9 May 1924 Amos stated that he had lived in Winnipeg and Vancouver, Canada from 1913 to 1921 and in France and Belgium from 26 May 1923 to November 1923. He gave his permanent residence as New York City. His previous passport was retained by the Department of State. Amos stated that he was an importer for his own account and for the account of Dujardin Novelty Company of New York City and would be leaving the United States for "commercial business" through The British Isles, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. It was his intent to return to the United States within two years.

Amos arrived at the Port of New York on July 18, 1940 aboard S.S. Manhattan Lisbon, Portugal. His son Albert was traveling with him on that voyage.
In the 1916 Canada Census his birth place was enumerated in error as South America.
In the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, Amos Barnum and family were enumerated in Winnipeg South, Manitoba, as follows:
