From the Evening Gazette, Sterling, Illinois, Wednesday, December 26, 1888: Supt. M. F. Barnum of the Whiteside County Infirmary, situated just west of Round Grove, died very suddenly last evening of apoplexy. He and an inmate of the house were carrying tubs of rainwater into the basement, preparatory to the weekly washing. They were carrying the third tubful, when Mr. Barnum suddenly tottered, and falling to the floor, died almost instantly. Mr. Barnum had been afflicted with diabetes and heart trouble for years. He was about 55 years old and leaves a wife and four children. Mr. Barnum was superintendent at the poor farm for between five and six years. Previous to his appointment he was a carpenter and builder at Morrison.
