Cutler was a Private with Company "I", 25th Massachusetts, from 22 July 1862 to October 1864. Upon enlistment, he gave his residence as North Brookfield, Massachusetts and his age as 36. He received a pension as an Army Invalid; Certificate No. 90562.

In Massachusetts, Town Records, 1620-1988 there is an entry for an illegitimate child born to Sally Rice on 20 February 1825 and given the name Cutler Barnum. It is assumed that Sally Rice was a sister of Elizabeth, who married Ebenezer Barnum. Elizabeth and Ebenezer apparently raised Cutler as their own child.
