From the New York Times, Feb 5, 1891. pg. 2. Suspension of an Old House; An Assignment Made by the Firm of S.C. Barnum & Co.: Barnum's clothing store, 196 to 200 Chatham Square, one of the landmarks of the city, has been closed after a business career of forty-six years. The business was carried on by Stephen C. Barnum and George Crosby, under the style of S.C. Barnum & Co. They made a general assignment yesterday to Thomas S. Fitch, giving preference to William K. Hinman for $6,000, and to others.
From the New York Times, July 8, 1909: Stephen Crosby Barnum, once the proprietor of one of the largest clothing firms in this city, died yesterday at the Edgemere Hotel, Eat Orange, N. J., of heart disease after an illness of five weeks. He was born in Brewster, N. Y., 65 years ago. When young he came to New York and started on a small scale in the retail clothing business, later establishing a large store on the Bowery. He retired several years ago. He leaves a widow and two sons, Stephen C. Barnum, Jr., of East Orange, and Joshua Barnum of this city.
