From the Utica Daily Press, Utica, New York, February 23, 1891: Early yesterday morning occurred the death of George Barnum at his residence. In his demise a musician, known the length and breadth of the State, is removed. Mr.Barnum was born in Utica, N.Y. over 68 years ago and has never resided in any other place. He showed genius in musical matters early in life, and long before he had attained maturity had adopted it as a profession. In 1840, Mr. Barnum joined the Old Utica Band; his age at that time being 17 years…One of the members was Henry Cole, who had no superior as cornet player in Central New York at that time. Mr. Barnum at once selected that instrument as his specialty and became highly proficient as a player. When Mr. Afnott died he became leader of the organization. The band became one of the best known in the state…Mr.Barnum’s professional career was not confined to local organizations and his fame as band organizer, leader and teacher was widespread…Thirty-nine years ago Mr. Barnum married Cornelia Christian and three children were the fruit of the union. In 1885, the youngest son died and the blow was so great that the indulgent and loving father never recovered and gradually failed in health. Two months ago he was attacked with pneumonia which resulted in his death. Besides a wife there survive two sons, George N. and Fred E. of Utica; also a brother James B. who is connected with the Sub-Treasury in New York and a sister, Miss Martha Barnum of Utica.
