Notes for Nancy LEADBETTER

Nancy Leadbetter (daughter of Thomas Leadbetter and Anna Rowley) was born in Richmond, Massachusetts. After marriage, she lived a few miles away in Alford, Massachusetts. After the premature death of her husband, she moved to Broome County, New York with her children to where her parents had moved within the township of Maine (Note: prior to 1848 and the establishment of Maine township, it was Union township).

Nancy married first, Dr. Forward Barnum and had 6 children with him:
1. Catherine Barnum b. 1816 m. William Lester Leadbetter
2. Henry Forward Barnum b. 1818 d. 1909 m. Julia A. Spencer
3. Laura Angeline Barnum b. 1820 d. 1880 m. Rufus Fancher Hoyt
4. William Orson Barnum b. 1822 m. Effie Maria Snyder
5. Arabella Barnum b. 1825 m. William Henry Gates
6. Nancy Malvina Barnum. b 1828

After the death of her husband in 1828, Nancy married Stephen Poor. The marriage appears to have failed after a few years and Stephen Poor is believed to have removed to Antrim, New Hampshire, possibly in 1832. It is possible that Stephen and Nancy (Leadbetter/Barnum) Poor had a child or two before they separated.

There is a solitary record that indicates Nancy died in Syracuse, NY and said to be interred that city, but her gravesite has been found and is in the Village of Maine Cemetery and she is buried alongside her grandson Bingley Leadbetter (son of William L. Leadbetter and Catherine Barnum), her parents Thomas and Anna (Rowley) Leadbetter, and her sister Anna Leadbetter. It's possible she had gone to Syracuse for medical care at a hospital or long-care home and the record of her (or perhaps another woman with the same name) died there and the administrators who did the paperwork might have assumed she'd be buried in Syracuse. We will probably never know how Syracuse fits into her records.
