The Barnum Family, 1517-1904 calls him Loyal Barnum. Levi Loyal Barnum, Sr. and his son Levi Loyal Barnum, Jr. occasionally reversed their given names, a practice that caused confusion both during their lifetimes and also for later family genealogists. For example, in the 1850 census the enumerator seems to have misunderstood the name Loyal L. Barnum and written instead "Lawyer L. Barnum" for Levi, Sr. and "Royal L. Barnum" for his son Levi, Jr.
