From The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong, of Northampton, Mass., Volume 2, Benjamin Dwight, 1871, p. 782: Mary Elizabeth Green, b. April 20, 1837, m. May 5, 1855, Sergeant Edwin Wesley Barnum, b. April 23, 1835 (son of Nelson Barnum of Sault St, Marie, and Natie Curtiss).
From the Iowa Recorder, Greene, Iowa, June 17, 1903: Mary Elizabeth Greene was born April 7, 1837, at Detroit, Michigan, and died June 14, 1903, at Dubuque, Iowa. She resided at Detroit until May 5, 1855, when she was married to Edwin W. Barnum, after which they moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Her husband enlisted in Co. E 4th Iowa Infantry when the Civil War broke out, and was killed at the battle of Pea Ridge, Missouri (sic, s/b Arkansas), March 7, 1862.
January 1, 1894, she moved with her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Booton to Greene, January 15, 1899, being an invalid and on account of the poor health of her daughter, she was taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque where she was cared for until her death.
She was the mother of four children, two of whom died in infancy. Those remaining to mourn her loss are Edwin B. Barnum of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. W. L. Booton of Greene, Iowa.
The deceased was a charter member of Plymouth Congregational church at Des Moines, Iowa. She was a great sufferer for many years, bearing her affliction with patience and Christian fortitude. The funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Booton on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. S. Cole, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
