Samuel Camfield was the only child of his father and mother; she died a week after his birth. When his father died in 1712 his uncle Jedediah Camfield was appointed as his guardian, and presumably raised him in Norwalk. No information has been found for his stepmother. Samuel Camfield, Jr. was one of the original settlers of Kent. According to church records both Samuel and his first wife, Mary Barnum, were admitted to communion at the Kent First Congregational Church on 10 May 1741, some 11 days after the church was organized.
