The 1860 US Census for Nevada City, California shows the following family group: William Kent, age 39, born in VT, druggist; Wm. H. Kent, age 17, born in VT; J. Kent, age 15, born in VT (female); E. B. Kent, age 13, born in VT; C. B. Kent, age 1, born in CA; J. W. Barnum, age 65, born in VT; L. C. Barnum, age 49, born in VT. For some reason the mother of this family, Julia H. Barnum, is not enumerated with the family. Although the dates are a few years off, it appears that the two male Barnums in this family group were Jasper W. and Loyal C. Barnum, uncles of Julia H. Barnum. In a separate household in the same place (enumerated with the Meek family) was J. H. Kent, age 45, born in VT, (male). He might possibly have been a brother of William Kent.
The 1870 Nevada City census record shows: Wm. Kent, age 49, born in NY, dentist; Julia H. Kent, age 39, born in VT, at home; E. W. Barnum, age 76, born in VT, gardener (this is Julia's father, Erastus Wolcott Barnum); Wm. H. Kent, age 27, born in VT, miner; Edson B. Kent, age 22, born in VT, carpenter and Charles E. Kent, age 10, born in CA, at home.
he 1880 Nevada City census record shows: William Kent, age 64 (should be 69), born in NY, parents born in NH, dentist; Julia H. Kent, age 59, wife, born in VT, father born in VT, mother born in NY. Also shown that year, in Los Angeles, 2nd Ward, is their son Edson B. Kent, age 32, born in VT, carpenter, parents born in VT; Sarah Kent, age 32, born in IL, parents born in IL; Pearl Kent, age 13, born in CA, Father born in VT, Mother born in IL.
