On 2 Sep 1828, he purchased land at Walsingham Township from his father. On 12 Jul 1833, James R. Barnum of Charlotteville Township petitioned for land as the son of a United Empire Loyalist. He bought land at Charlotteville from Jacob Potts, Sr. on 26 Feb 1834 and sold land to Charles Francis Beaupre on 11 Jul 1834. He bought additional land from his brother Henry V. Barnum on 11 May 1835. In 1837, he moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, and sold his land at Charlotteville to Edward Beaupre and Thomas Holt Farnham, in the latter of which deeds he was recorded as a cordwainer. He is recorded at Ypsilanti in the US Census of 1840.
