A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Interestingly, confusion exists regarding the correct spelling of his given name and that of his son Asahel James Barnum, Jr. His given name appears as Asahel in the US Census enumerations of 1900, 1910 and 1930 but as Aschel on his gravestone. He has not been found in the 1920 US Census. On the gravestone of his son and in the US Census enumerations of 1900, 1910 and 1930 his son's given name appears as Asahel, while in the 1920 Census he was enumerated as Aschel. Asahel is a spelling that appears in the bible, has been used by numerous notable persons and also appears in several later generations of this same family. Additionally, is spelled thus in seven of the nine documents mentioned above. Although Aschel does not appear in any online search of given names, caution suggests that it be included in this profile as an alternate spelling.
Aschel was a member of the LDS Church (Mormon) and had two wives and two separate families.
