Willis Hanford Barnum enlisted at the age of 19 (August 14, 1862) in Company "I", 1st New York Dragoons (Cavalry). He received a pension as an Army Invalid.

Morrison & Co., Ovid, NY. The author is Helen C. Cooper, CSG# 7689. This extract from the History appears on pg. 381: Town of Burns, named for Robert Burns, the Scottish poet originally belonging to the Morris Reserve. W. H. Barnum, editor and proprietor of the Canaseraga Times, was born 1 Apr. 1843, in New Fairfield, CT. He removed from that place to Canaseraga in 1847, and has since lived there. During the late rebellion he served twenty months as private in Company "I", 1st New York Dragoons. In 1876 he was married to Miss Alice V. Dyer, of Almond, pg. 288
[Note: Burns is a tiny town in western NY, about thirty miles north of the PA border; the equally tiny town of Canaseraga is about five miles northwest of Burns, and Almond is six or seven miles to the south. All still exist (1999). The nearest town of any size is Hornell].
He was buried in Canaseraga Cemetery. The record reads: Barnum, Willis H., 1843-1928, Veteran of the Civil War, Scott Section.
