This information for Nelson Barnum comes from the 1871 Canadian Census: Barnum, Nelson, Age [27] Birthplace [O] Religion [WM] Ethnic Origin [GERMAN] Occupation [F] District [58] Sub District [F] Page [19] County [HLB] Description [Stanhope Twp.]. The 1871 Peterborough County Directory gives the population of Stanhope township as 250 persons, and records the names of, among others, William and Nelson Barnum.

The 1881 Census for Dudley & Dysart & Harcourt, Peterborough East, Ontario enumerates him as a farmer and a member of the Church of England.

Upon the death of his father, Nelson inherited the rebellion box given to his grandmother by the maker, Henry Weaver (relation not known) from his prison cell.
Nelson was born in Murray township, Northumberland County, Ontario, according to Church of England records.
