From the Otsego Farmer, March 16, 1889: Our community was deeply shocked on Monday morning last to learn of the death of Mr. Sylvester W. Barnum. Very few knew of his brief sickness and the announcement of his death east a gloom over our community. He was around as usual until Thursday, when he was taken with chills; a physician was called, and all was done that was possible. Sunday morning he seemed easier, but about 1 o'clock p.m. he was taken worse and gradually failing he passed away at 7:30, peacefully, in his full senses, surrounded by all his family but Mrs. Andrew Davidson, who is prostrated by sickness. Mr. Barnum was in his 75th year, and was a life-long resident of our community, where he was respected and honored by all. He was one of the few that our community could fully spare, and to the bereaved family his loss will be irreparable. In all the walks of life he was ever ready to do his part, and to make easy the cares of others in a kindly way, which won him the regards of all. The funeral services were held at his late residence conducted by the Rev. N.B. Knapp, and was largely attended by deeply sympathizing friends. The interment was in our cemetery in the family lot.
