From the Otsego Farmer, June 11, 1909: The death of Mrs. S.W. Barnum which occurred at Middlefield Center Saturday morning June 5, 1909, came as a shock to her friends although she had been confined to her room and bed for more than four years. She was the youngest of a large family born to Mr. & Mrs. James Chase all of whom had passed to the homeland some years ago. Mrs. Barnum had reached an age which few attain, having passed her ninetieth birthday May 10. She was born and always lived in the town of Middlefield and for more than a half century in the house in which she died. She was a quiet unassuming woman, loved and respected by all who knew her and she retained her faculties in a marked degree always bright and witty. For over thirty years she was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Many years ago she was united in marriage to Sylvester W. Barnum who died 20 years ago. Of her seven children five survive one dying in infancy. The other Altana Davidson died in 1900. Those who survive her are Adelbert C. who resides at home, ex-Judge J.W. Barnum of Cherry Valley, Mary A. who also resides at home, Vernie M. Hannah of Middlefield Center and Sylvester W. Barnum of Cherry Valley who is associated with his brother in the practice of law. Besides those mentioned there are grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous more distant relatives who have the sympathy of a host of friends in their time of bereavement. Interment was in the village cemetery.
