Barnum, Villeroy; 21-30 years; head of household; 1 male 10-15 years; 1 female 21-30 years and 1 female under 5 years.
These would have been: Villeroy, 28; Nancy, 28, unknown male, 10-15 and Mary, about 2. This raises the question, "Where was Emily?" She would have been about 8 years old at that time. Villeroy appears in the 1885 Minnesota State Census at White Bear Village, Ramsey County, where he was living with his granddaughter Julia Clewett and her family.

From the History of White Bear Lake, Minnesota: The first settler in what is now the city of White Bear Lake was V.B. Barnum, a farmer from Conn. who purchased in Sec 22 & 23 by Military Land Warrant in 1852, between Goose & White Bear Lake. His was the first resort hotel.
According to Fifty Years in the Northwest by William Folsom, Villeroy Barnum was an original settler of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, owning 175 acres. He operated the first hotel in the area until retiring in 1856. He was the first assessor of the township of White Bear Lake, 11 May 1858.
