A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
John Barnum served during the Civil War. He supposedly enlisted on 16 Oct 1861, in the Lafayette Light Guard, Company "C", 70th New York, served as a bugle boy and was discharged, disabled, after two years of service.
There is some confusion about this entry. The 70th New York Infantry Regiment "1st Excelsior" was first organized under authority of the War Department as the 1st Regiment, Sickles' Brigade, at Camp Scott, Staten Island, N.Y., and was later designated the 70th Regiment New York Infantry (December 11, 1861). It was not called the Lafayette Light Guard. On the other hand, the 55th New York Infantry Regiment "Garde De Lafayette" was organized at New York City and mustered in August 28, 1861. The unit was later consolidated with 38th New York Infantry as Companies "G," "H," "I" and "K" (December 21, 1862).
He died at the home of his 2nd wife's granddaughter, Mrs. Curtis Johnson. According to his death certificate, he died of "shock," as a result of his home having burned to the ground three weeks earlier.
