A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Isaac Barnum, son of Samuel Barnum and Frances White, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on May 17, 1855 (Ohio Death Certificate). He was listed with his parents in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Carroll, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was enumerated in 1880 with his wife Melissa and first child Edgar in East Huntington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1900, Isaac and family were enumerated in White, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. By 1910, the family had moved to Johnston, Trumbull County, Ohio where they were listed in the 1910 census.
Isaac Barnum’s Ohio Death Certificate calls him “Isac”. He died on April 23, 1917 in Vernon, Trumbull County, Ohio and was buried in Johnston Cemetery, Trumbull County.

The founder of the Barnum family in this country was Samuel Barnum, among whose lineal descendants must be numbered Isaac Barnum, of East Huntingdon township. Colonel Joseph Barnum, who is supposed to have been the son of the emigrant ancestor, was the father of Justus Barnum.
Samuel Barnum, son of Justus Barnum, was born in 1787 in New York state, and followed the calling of a miner. During the War of 1812 he served in the army. It was he who transplanted his branch of the family to this part of Pennsylvania, settling in what is now Fayette county, at Geneva. In disposition he was quiet and retiring. Mr. Barnum married Elizabeth Myissinger, and their children were: Joseph, Samuel, Jacob, Jessie, Christina, married Henry Williams; Ruth, married Henry Harnbeck; Lydia, Joseph, Ashton and one daughter who died in infancy.
Samuel Barnum, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Myissinger) Barnum, was born January 12, 1824, in Geneva or Fairchance, and spent his boyhood in what is now Fayette county, subsequently moving to what is now Washington county, Pennsylvania. He took up his abode near Monongahela City, where for twelve or fifteen years he was a coal operator. During his latter years he served as mine boss. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Barnum married Frances White, born December 25, 1825, and whose ancestors were among the early settlers of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Barnum were the parents of the following children: 1. Maria, who became the wife of Isaac Rallinson, of Everson, and is now deceased, as is her husband. 2. Samuel, who died in boyhood, in 1862. 3. William, a merchant in Everson. 4. Isaac, mentioned hereafter. 5. Margaret, the wife of Byron R. Kelly, a mill-worker of Browntown, Pennsylvania. 6. Emma, married John Swoope, a miner of Hammondsville. 7. Leah, the wife of Peter Wise, proprietor of the Avonmore Hotel, Westmoreland county. 8. George W., who lives in Everson and is employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. 9. Henry Albert, who was also in the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and is now deceased. Mr. Barnum died March 30, 1895, and his widow is a resident of South Everson.
Isaac Barnum, son of Samuel and Frances (White) Barnum, was born May 17, 1855, in Coal Bluff, Washington county, where he was educated in the public schools, and lived until reaching the age of seventeen. At the age of twelve he began to work in the mines and continued to do so until 1880, when he entered the sheet mill at Scottdale, where he steadily advanced until he attained the position of sheet heater which he has filled for about eleven years. In 1894 he purchased a tract of four and one-quarter acres, on which he erected a desirable residence and on which he has since resided. Politically he is a Republican. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Barnum married, December 25, 1877, Melissa A., born February 20, 1858, daughter of Jacob F. and Lydia Mauk, and they have been the parents of the following children: 1. Edgar Leroy, born December 27, 1878, and is a roller in the sheet mills at Parkersburg, West Virginia. 2. Cora Luella, born December 27, 1880, and is the wife of L. J. Matteson. They have one child, Alveretta Irene. 3. Winnie Blanche, born December 8, 1882, and is married to G. T. Hockey, of Ruffsdale. 4. Samuel Ray, born August 16, 1885, graduated from the Alverton high school in the class of 1904, and qualified for teaching. 5. Olive may, twin to Samuel Ray, who died at the age of seven months. 6. Bessie Florence, born May 22, 1889. 7. Howard Nelson, born June 23, 1892. 8. Stella Pearl, born November 5, 1897, died November 13, 1902. 9. Frances Cleora, born November 17, 1901.
