During the Revolutionary War, Stephen Barnum enlisted 21 Apr 1777 and served 7 years as a Sergeant in Captain Beardsley's Company of Colonel Heman Swift's 7th Regiment of the Connecticut Continental Line. He was discharged 5 Apr 1781. Pension records state that he served under the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) until he was determined unfit for further duty due to wounds received in battle.
