A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From The New York Times, January 24, 1926: Theron E. Barnum. Syracuse, N. Y., Jan. 24 (AP).--Theron E. Barnum, 73, for many years a prominent figure in the railroad business in Central New York, died this morning, after an acute attack of heart disease. Mr. Barnum was the father of Jerome D. Barnum, publisher of the Syracuse Post-Standard. Mr. Barnum was former freight manager for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad with offices at Binghamton. He was promoted to freight agent in Syracuse and later became general freight manager. He relinquished his duties following an acute illness from overwork and moved to Syracuse.
From the Binghamton Press, Monday, January 25, 1926: Theron E. Barnum, 73 years old, formerly of this city and an official in the freight department of the Lackawanna railroad for several years, died at his home 813 Comstock Street, Syracuse, Sunday morning from an acute heart attack suffered last Friday. Although under the care of a physician for many years, Barnum continued duties as superintendent of the Post-Standard building until he was stricken Friday. He was the father of Jerome D. Barnum, publisher of the Post-Standard, and stepfather of William S. Estabrook and Charles S. Estabrook, widely known attorneys in Syracuse. Barnum is also survived by his wife, Mrs. Caroline Sears Barnum, who he married in Binghamton; a sister, Mrs. James Hayes of Palo Alto, California, five nieces and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home and the body will be placed in the chapel at Oakwood Cemetery.
He was born In New Milford, Pennsylvania, December 22, 1863, being the eighth generation of the family. He started in the employ of the Lackawanna at the age of 16 gradually working to the office of freight agent in Syracuse, and then came to this city as freight manager of the Lackawanna. Following serious illness, he resigned from railroad service and returned to Syracuse where he regained his health and became superintendent of the Post-Standard building.
