A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Caroline Sears, wife of Theron E. Barnum: Some sources give her maiden name as Estabrook. While Sears was her maiden name, it appears that Estabrook was the name of her first husband. An obituary for William Estabrook in the Palladium Times of Oswego, NY, dated 2/13/1960 mentions among his survivors, a half-brother: Jerome D. Barnum
Summarized from the Syracuse Herald, October 14, 1934: Mrs. Caroline Sears Barnum, 86, a resident of Syracuse, New York for 46 years, with the exception of three years she lived in Binghamton, died last night (October 13, 1934) at the home of her son William Estabrook near Fayetteville, New York. She was the mother of Jerome D. Barnum publisher of the Post-Standard. Mrs. Barnum was born February 3, 1848 in Newark Valley, New York, the daughter of the late Hart B. Sears and Cynthia Williams Sears. She was married twice. Her first husband was Dr. Charles G. Estabrook. Her second marriage was to Theron E. Barnum. Surviving are three sons: Charles S. Estabrook and William S. Estabrook of Syracuse and Fayetteville, and Jerome D. Barnum and 10 grandchildren including Jerome D. Barnum Jr., T. Crouse Barnum and Lucia Jane Barnum.
