Zenus Barnum has been shown in other sources as Zenas and even Zeneas. The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family notes that he was the last son of Ebenezer Barnum and Elizabeth Skiff, but then names three more sons who might be issue of that marriage (Heman Barnum, Ashbell Barnum and Daniel Barnum). Those three have subsequently been shown to be sons of Francis Barnum (1730-abt 1802) and Anne Dunning (1736/37-bef 1783).
Zenus Barnum, a resident of Kent, Connecticut, enlisted 15 Feb 1777 as a soldier in Captain Strong's company, 5th Connecticut Line Regiment (Colonel Bradley). He died 17 Oct 1781, during the siege of Yorktown, where Charles Cornwallis (1st Marquess Cornwallis, 2nd Earl Cornwallis, Baron Cornwallis of Eye, Viscount Brome)(1738-1805) surrendered two days later, on 19 October. He is shown on the Yorktown Monument as Capt. Zeneas Barnum.
Researcher Betty Goodgame gives his place of death as Kent, Connecticut.
