A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family states that Daniel may be the son of Ebenezer Barnum and Elizabeth Skiff, but also calls Zenus (born 1760) the last son of that marriage. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War, in Captain Blakeley's company, Colonel Bradley's 16th Connecticut Regiment. He was in Vermont in 1781.
A Daniel Barnham appears in the 1840 Census of Pensioners Revolutionary or Military Services; With the names, ages, and places of residence Returned by the marshalls of the several judicial districts; under The Act for Taking the Sixth Census, as follows: Name: Daniel Barnham, Age: 78, Head of Household; Daniel Barnham, Residence: Westfield, Chatauqua, New York.
Daniel was in Hinesburg and Dorset, VT. There are land transactions for Daniel and his father Francis in Hinesburg records for the year 1784. (There are eight persons in the household in 1820, one male and one female over the age of 45 at Hinesburg, VT.) At some point prior to the 1840 census Daniel moved to Westfield, Chatauqua Co., NY, where he died about 1840, age 78, formerly of Dorset, VT. An affidavit included in his probate packet in Chittenden Co., VT, filed in 1845, says that a (33 year old) friend from Hinesburgh had never heard Daniel mention any parents or siblings. This man would not have been born yet when Francis died and Heman moved to Franklin County. (By the time Daniel died all but Lucina would have been deceased).
He purchased the property for 4 pounds and was shown as "formerly of Dorset..." (4 pounds in 1795 is the equivalent of $344 in 2001 dollars).
An article in the Vermont Sentinel for 25 March 1813 states, in part: "Died at Hinesburgh, within a few weeks past, ...Mrs. Barnam, wife of Capt. Dan Barnum. Mrs. Miles wife of Mr. John Miles. Mr. Daniel Barnum, aged 20..." The article apparently refers to Daniel's first wife, Elizabeth, and their son Daniel, Jr.
