A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Lewis Harlow moved his family to Crawford, Dawes, Nebraska about 1886-87. Tthey remained in that area until around 1892-93, when they moved back to Kansas. Lewis Harlow's son Lewis James recalled riding on horseback between Nebraska and Kansas at about the age of 9, during the family's move.
The book Crawford Nebraska 1886-1961 has a segment titled "Seth Barnum, son of Warren P. Barnum." The article states that he arrived in Dawes County in 1889 from Hiawatha (Brown County) Kansas. His father and eldest brother had arrived in 1888, homesteading eleven miles southwest of Crawford.
Jim, the youngest son of Lewis James Barnum, has said that he recalls that his grandfather was in the cattle ranch business with someone else (Jim thought a friend, not a relative) in Dawes, County, Nebraska. That could have been to the west, in nearby Sioux County, Nebraska. Lewis Harlow left the Crawford area because of high cattle losses, a result of depredation by wolves.
In the 1905 Kansas State Census the family of Lewis H. Barnum was enumerated as follows:
