Secretary’s Report, Harvard College, Class of 1875: William Slocum Barnum. Son of John Gould and Sarah Elizabeth (Slocum) Barnum, born at Portland, Maine, August 28,1852. Fitted for college at Newton (Massachusetts) High School. Left the class in December, 1872, and until May, 1874, was bookkeeper for Lambert Brothers, window-glass importers, in Boston; then for a year was in the fur business on Avon Place, Boston. Taught school for two years at South Dennis, Mass., and in 1877 went to California, where he was engaged in coal mining until January, 1886; then bought an interest with S. W. Cowles & Co., post traders at Fort Apache, Ariz. In the spring of 1888 he was appointed Post Trader at that place, a large military post in the centre of the Indian Reservation. He was there during the Chiricahua War with Geronimo. In the winter of 1893-94 he had an attack of la grippe from which he never fully recovered. He died suddenly of the rupture of a blood-vessel near the heart at Antioch, California in April 1894. Married, June 1893, to Nettie Chase, of Antioch.
