A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Jehiel/Johiel Barnum enlisted, 1776, in the New Levies; marched to Canada; was taken ill and allowed a furlough. He then enrolled as a minute man; responded when Tryon invaded the colony and was at the burning of Danbury and Norwalk. In 1818 he was allowed a pension for one year as sergeant, Connecticut line.
The US Census of 1790 shows Jehiel Barnum, with one other male of 16 years and upwards, six males of under 16 and five free white females, living in Monkton, Addison County, Vermont.
Jehiel was a Master Mason A.F. & A.M.
According to Bowman, Fred Q. Landholders of Northeastern New York, 1739-1802. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1987, Jahiel [sic Barnum was listed in Volume B, Page 49 as the mortgagor of a parcel of property located in Chateaugay, Clinton County, New York, 21 Sep 1801.
He and his family were founders of Bangor, Franklin County, New York, which was taken from Dickinson, June 15, 1812. The first officers of the town included Eleazer Barnum, Clerk and Constable and Jehiel Barnum, Fence Viewer. Talmadge Barnum was a member of a committee formed in 1832 to construct two poorhouses in the town and he was also Town Supervisor 1843-1844.

He was buried in North Bangor Cemetery.
