A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Moses BARNUM

For some unknown reason, his surname appears as Beeman in the Vital Records of Kent, Connecticut. That entry is an obvious error and there is no doubt of his parentage as shown here.

On April 19, 2005, Sharon Patton sent me the following information, which was provided to her by Chris Chester:

I was able to take a look at the Beeman/Barnum records in Barbour Collection, Vol. 20 (1999). The Beemans are listed on pages 39-41 and the marriage is recorded as Samuel Beeman and Rebeckah Church. The children, Abijah, Amos, Jesse, Sarah, Moses and Moses's twin (who died 1 day old) are all recorded under Beeman, not under Barnum. Here's the catch: Moses is recorded as Moses Barnum Beeman. At first, I thought Barnum was a middle name, and Beeman the correct surname, but that is not the case. The mistake was made either in transcribing of the original Barbour records into that volume of the collection, or else in the original Barbour records themselves. In any event, I did some more searching and have come to the conclusion that the family of Samuel and Rebeckah are Barnums, not Beemans, and except for that error in the records none of them ever used the Beeman surname. The family moved to Monkton, Addison Co., Vermont about the time of the Revolution, and can be found in census records in 1790, 1800 and 1810 in Monkton or Vergennes, Addison Co., VT where Samuel died. Moses b. 14 Dec 1774 in Kent, is a Barnum, he married (_?_) McAllister and had at least 3 sons and 2 daughters all born in Vermont. His son, Newell C. eventually went to Indiana. Your Moses Beeman is a different person, not the son of Samuel Beeman and Rebeckah Church. Moses Beeman was not born 14 Dec 1774 in Kent, but was probably born about 1772 (he is shown as 87 years old in 1860) somehere in Connecticut. Moses Barnum can be accounted for, living in Monkton, Vermont from 1790 through at least 1810.
