A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
There is confusion in the genealogical record for this Barnabas. The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family calls him both Barnabas and Barna Barnum and confuses him with Barnabas Barnum, Sr. (1788-1869), mistakenly interchanging the wives and children of the two. That source says that he met with a violent death at Natchez while engaged in boating on the Mississippi River, 6 Jun 1830. The Barnum Family, 1517-1904 mistakenly assigns his children to John Barnum, son of Ebenezer (born 1712), son of Thomas. The Barnabas Barnum who appears in the 1860 US Census for Bangor, Franklin County, New York, is obviously not this Barnabas.
On 1 Oct 2007 the INGenWeb Coordinator for Jennings County Indiana found information about Barna in a probate book and posted the following on Ancestry.com:
And now at this day comes Mary Barnum Administratrix of the Estate of Barna Barnum, deceased, and returns into Court the following inventory of the appraisement of the personal property of the said estate, to wit: (follows a list of various household items).
Also, the following schedule of the property sold at a public sale of the property of Barna Barnum, deceased, by Mary Barnum, Administratrix of the estate of Barna Barnum, deceased, on the 1st day of September 1831, with the names of the purchasers and the articles and amounts of said purchase, to wit: (follows a list of purchasers, articles sold and prices paid).
The Independent State of Vermont was constituted on 2 June 1777, and joined the Union as the 14th state on 4 March 1791.
