A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From the Franklin Republican, Friday, November 20, 1891, Volume 47, Number 47, page 8, col 1 & 2: Funeral Notes – Whiteland’s marshal, John Barnum died last Saturday evening. It was unexpected and shocking to the entire community. Mr. Barnum was respected by everybody and his death cast a gloom over his many friends.
Rev. D. A. Robertson, of Greenwood, preached a short discourse at the residence on Sabbath morning. Many of his brother Knights of Greenwood, Stone’s Crossing and Whiteland were present at Mr. Barnum’s funeral.
The remains were taken to Manilla, Rush county, and buried by the side of those of a former wife and child.
John Jones, of Greenwood, was a nurse during a part of the illness of Mr. Barnum. Mr. Jones endeared himself greatly to the friends by his kind and assiduous attention to his sick brother Knight.
Mr. Barnum had lived in Whiteland nearly four years. He had many friends, but no enemies. His prominent traits of character were honesty, integrity and uprightness. He was obliging and kind and soon forgave and forgot the wrongs of others to himself.
He was a member of the M.E. church and the K. of P. He was about forty-five years of age. His death is a material loss to the town, but we trust it is his eternal gain.
He leaves a wife and one child, little Claud, with many friends and relations to mourn his death.
Greenwood – The K of P Lodge, of Greenwood, attended the funeral of Mr. Barnum at Whiteland, Sunday morning.
