From the Mountain Democrat, Placerville, California, Friday, October 30, 1931: A pitiful tale of squandered wealth and the alleged use of narcotics which caused a once promising career to end in El Dorado hospital came to light with the death last Sunday of Lyon M. Barnum, 43. Funeral services for the man will be held Friday afternoon at the graveside in Union Cemetery. Barnum was the son of a former president of the Bank of Commerce at Québec. A brother is now on that bank's directorate and another brother is connected with a branch of the bank in Vancouver. Barnum had that same opportunity. From the time he was 19 until he was 21, he was employed in the Québec bank. Several weeks ago, Barnum and his wife, destitute and in a weakened condition, alleged because they had no funds to buy the narcotics to which they were addicted, applied at the sheriff's office for assistance in getting narcotics. They were removed to the county hospital for treatment and a cold with which Barnum was troubled developed into pneumonia. His wife stated he had once been left between $8000 and $10000 but that high living had taken it all. Lately he had been traveling with an orchestra. Still more recently he had been a pianist in Nevada roadhouses and then they came to El Dorado county. Burial arrangements were completed after communicating with the brother in Québec.
