Honeyoye Falls, June 1 -- John Barnum, a well-known citizen of this place, died suddenly at his home ... Besides the widow, one brother, Wm. Barnum of Rochester, and two sisters, Mrs. Burdorf of Hemlock and Mrs. Delia Wartin of Pittsford, survive.
From the Democrat and Chronicle, Saturday June 2, 1900: Honeoye Falls Will Miss. John Barnum, an old resident of the town of Mendon, died suddenly at his home Thursday evening. He intended to march with Lewis Gates Post No. 369 of which he was a member, Decoration Day, but was taken ill.
Deceased served one and a half years during the Civil War with ninety eight New York Infantry and was honorably discharged at Rochester May 10, 1865. For forty years he resided in Honeoye Falls. His widow, one brother William survive.
John and Maria Barnum are buried in the Pioneer section of the Honeoye Cemetery, in Row 1 lots 5 and 6. Their stones are almost straight across the road from the cemetery sign on the east side of Clover Street. John Barnum’s stone reads: ‘Civil War, Co. A, 98th NY Volunteer Infantry, died June 1, 1900 age 62 yrs.” Other information says that he enlisted in Co. A, 98th NY on December 27, 1861. He was wounded and was discharged May 10, 1865.
